Uses: Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride 25 mg Capsules is an Antihistamine Allergy Medication comparable to active ingredients of Benadryl and is used to treat allergies, primarily to stop itching. It may also be used as a mild sedative and to control motion sickness, travel anxiety and other related conditions, such as insect bite.
Availability: Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride 25 mg Caps is is a non-prescription over-the-counter (OTC) product.
How to use: Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride 25 mg Caps is not approved by FDA for use in Veterinary medicine, but it is a commonly accepted practice to use this medication in dogs and cats. The regular dose in dogs is 0.5-2 mg per pound 2-3 times daily. The regular dose in cats is 0.25-0.5 mg per pound every 12 hours. In cats, diphenhydramine is bitter and can cause profuse, yet temporary, drooling.
Side effects: Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride generally safe and effective. Side effects may include sedation, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea and lack of appetite.
Precautions: Do not use this medication in animals that are allergic to antihistamines. Do not use in animals with glaucoma, lung disease, heart disease, an overactive thyroid, high blood pressure and prostate enlargement. Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals. Diphenhydramine may interact with other medications. Always consult your veterinarian to determine if other drugs your pet is receiving could interact with Diphenhydramine. Such drugs include epinephrine, tranquilizers, heparin and barbiturates.
Overdose: If overdose is suspected, contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency hospital immediately. Symptoms of overdose can include seizures, extreme drowsiness, coma, respiratory depression and death.
Storage: Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Store this medication at room temperature, away from excess heat, light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.
