When dogs evolved many years ago, their teeth were modeled to suit their diet at the time. Dental disease in pets starts as small deposits of sticky plaque forming on the surface of the tooth near the gum line. Plaque becomes hard to form tartar and this tartar develops more till it works its way down between the gum and the teeth allowing bacteria in. This leads to gingivitis and infection in the pocket between the teeth and gums. Eventually this infection causes the structures which hold the teeth in place (ligaments & bone) to fail leading to loose teeth which are painful and fall out. Raw meaty bones are the most useful food to give pets to promote chewing. If your pet doesn’t like to chew on these things then there are several other options to help prevent dental disease: Various types of dental toys and chews are available for dogs which promote chewing. Dental Kongs & Grandosso Bones; C.E.T. HEXtra Premium chews that combine the mechanical action of rawhide, antimicrobial power of chlorhexidine and C.E.T. Dual Enzyme System for added plaque control and prevention of tarter-forming bacterial buildup. Natural abrasive cleansing action and plaque-fighting enzymes help to keep breath fresh and teeth clean. Regular brushing of teeth may be required. Pet toothpaste is generally a combination of enzymatic cleaning agents and antiseptic compounds to kill oral bacteria. If your dog is not keen on brushing, there are some gels & sprays which can be put in the mouth to help control the bacteria that cause bad breath and dental disease. Examples: Dental Spray Gel & Dentafresh, and C.E.T. Enzymatic Toothpaste Poultry Flavor. Once dental disease has already started simple chewing and brushing is not enough. A trip to the Vet is often required to remove the tartar that has built up above and below the gums before any preventative program can be successful. This usually involves a general anesthetic under which the following procedures may be performed: ultrasonic scaling to remove tartar above and below the gums; low speed polishing to smooth the enamel surface to reduce new tartar build up; extractions if any teeth are beyond saving; surgical procedures on the gums around the teeth to reduce their ability to harbor bacteria.
