Uses: Clemastine is long-acting antihistamine and used to control itchy skin in animals, and for temporarily relief of the common cold, hay fever, and other allergy symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes.
Availability: Clemastine 1.34 mg tablets is as a non-prescription over-the-counter (OTC) product.
How to use: Clemastine is not FDA approved for use in animals, however, it is a commonly accepted practice for veterinarians to use this medication in dogs and cats. The usual dose: in dogs is 1/2 or 1 tablet every 12 hours, and in cats is 1/2 tablet every 12 hours.
Side effects: The side effects may include sedation, dry mouth, and diarrhea.
Precautions: Not for use in animals allergic to Clemastine. Use with caution in patients with enlarged prostate, bladder abstraction, glaucoma, and severe cardiac failure. Use with caution when given with sedatives or tranquilizers, and when given to pregnant or nursing animals.
Overdose: Sigh of overdose may include severe dry mouth, blurred vision, rapid heart rate, fever, urinary retention and possibly low blood pressure. If overdose is suspected, contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency hospital immediately.
Storage: Store at controlled room temperature (59-86ºF) in light resistant, childproof container. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.
